Why is my guitar is feeding back horribly?

I wired a completely new faceplate with a humbucker into my fender strat, but now when it's plugged in it feeds back so loudly I can't hear the notes. Then, interestingly, it stops feeding back and playing completely when the whammybar touches the output jack. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?
