Do People Have The Right To Be Racist?

We all have the right to say whatever we wish, but here's the dividing line: The First Amendment to the Constitution protects us from arrest and prosecution for speaking our minds, but it does not protect us in the court of public opinion. Here's how it works: Dog used the n-word, and he has that right. He can't be thrown in jail or taken to court over it. However, A&E is completely within their right to take his show off the air (or cancel it altogether) based on his comments. See, Dog can use the n-word if he wants to, but A&E doesn't have to give him a public forum where he could use that word again, and they don't have to spend time and money airing "Dog the Bounty Hunter" if they believe keeping him will bring discredit upon their network. Remember, A&E is in business to make money, and having someone who is perceived as a racist on one of their prime-time shows could cause a lot of problems (people boycotting A&E, advertisers pulling their ads from A&E, etc.). See how it works?
