When burning a DVD with Windows DVD maker its stops while encoding! How to fix this?

I have made a nice DVD of a recent vacation with videos and pictures. I converted all the videos to AVI format so I can use them in the DVD maker. I get through the program with no problems and when the DVD is ready to burn it begins encoding. The problem is it always stops at some point during the encoding (29.6 or whatever) and never finishes...Will it work eventually or how do I fix this?
